Back to: MAGDALENA BAY, Kayak & Whale Watch Trip

Itinerary: Magdalena Bay trip (paddling with the whales)

FIRST STEP: Leave your home and travel to your connection flight bound for La Paz
We encourage you to make your travel arrangements through KAHOLA TRAVEL: 1-800-852-8338. Robert is familiar with our trips and he will ensure you the best connections.

Day 1. Arrival; After arriving in La Paz, transfer by "Shuttle Express" to hotel LOS ARCOS. Your guides will meet the group in the courtyard of the hotel for an orientation and discussion of trip details. Supper this evening is on your own and the guides will be happy to offer suggestions and directions to some of La Paz many good restaurants.

Map of Baja Day 2. Monday; The group meets in the hotel at 7 AM to board the van for transfer to Mag Bay (approx 4 hrs.). We will have lunch enroute before reaching our launch point at Puerto San Carlos. Here we board skiffs for the trip across the bay to our base camp. This crossing will be an opportunity to observe the whales. A comprehensive sea kayak instructional session is presented on the beach upon arrival.

Day 3 to Day 5. We explore the many facets of Bahia Magdalena, departing daily from our base camp. Kayaking trips will include the protected coastline of Isla Magdalena and the labyrinth of mangroves in the northern bay where we can observe the wide variety of bird-life; including brown and white pelicans, common loons, white ibis, magnificent frigates, blue herons, snowy egrets and yellow-crowned night herons to name but a very few. Several forays into the middle of the bay, by motor boat, will provide ample opportunities to observe the Gray whales and become familiar with the activities and behaviors characteristic of their time in the calving lagoons. Hiking on the island provide an opportunity to investigate the subtly complex ecosystem of Baja's Pacific Coast, with your guides as interpreters. The spectacular expanse of beach on the Pacific side is the final resting place of several shipwrecks, and offers great beach-combing and walking.

Day 6. Returning to Puerto San Carlos before lunch we are met by our van for the trip back to La Paz. After checking into your hotel there is time to shower and explore this rustic old town. On your own for the evening.

Day 7. After check out, group-taxi to the airport (2 hours before flight departure).

Note: Itineraries are intended as guidelines only and are subject to change at the discretion of your guides due to weather and other general logistical conditions at the time of the trip. We strive to produce trips of consistently high quality and safety without compromise.
