MAGDALENA BAY - Sea Kayak with Gray Whales on the Pacific Coast of Baja - Mexico
Sea kayaking, Gray whale watching, island camping, hiking & snorkeling

"Magdalena Bay" is a guided whale watching & sea kayaking adventure in Magdalena bay on the Pacific side of Baja California Sur (the South state of Baja Mexico). This expedition uses primarily motor boats and sea kayaks for whale watching in the protected waters of Magdalena bay. Accompanied by our biologist guide we will observe the Gray whales, and explore the labyrinth of mangroves with over 100 species of marine birds. Walking over sand dunes, the finest beach combing, hiking trips on the Isla Magdalena, swimming and snorkeling in the sun-warmed, clear-blue water, are a bonus in this exceptional Baja Mexico adventure.

Map of Baja LOCATION: The Magdalena Bay expedition starts in the old town of La Paz, on the eastern coast of Baja, on the Sea of Cortez, a two hour and a half flight from Los Angeles USA.
From La Paz we will transfer by mini/bus across the peninsula (approx. four hour trip), to the town of Puerto San Carlos on the Pacific side of Baja, our launching point for Magdalena Bay (Bahia Magdalena).

TRIP DESCRIPTION: At Puerto San Carlos we will board motor boats for transfer to our base camp. The base camp is situated on a secluded beach and equipped with every amenity from over-sized tents to solar heated showers.
Here our expert guides will teach you the basic sea kayaking skills, and over the following days we will observe the Gray whales in a variety of locations using our biologist guide and the whale watching guides from the San Carlos eco-tourism cooperative.
We will depart the base camp daily for explorations along the eastern shore of Magdalena island which protects the bay from the open Pacific.
Daily whale watching incursions by motor boat, allowing us to cover more remote areas of the lagoon and to stay closer to the mothers & baby whales, will be supplemented by kayaking through the rich mangroves to see herons, egrets and ibis, as well as hiking and beach explorations.

This sheltered world of sand dunes, labyrinth mangroves and clear blue water is one of the main breeding and calving area for the Gray whales and home to an amazing array of colorful fish and over 100 species of birds.
For much of our trip, beach-combing is only a short walk across the dunes. Magdalena Bay is filled by tidal action from the Pacific but the sun warms the shallow water making swimming and snorkeling a pleasure. Hiking trips on the Magdalena island offer views of bay and ocean and unexpected delights such as the pungent scent of wild oregano or colorful tide pools teeming with life. Blending natural history, wildlife observation and cultural interaction, our Magdalena Bay expeditions are a wonderful way to explore the Pacific side of Baja.
